 Text Box: What is a theological reflection? The word Theology derived from the two Greek words (Theos) meaning "God" and (logos) meaning "word/knowledge/understanding."  Broadly in Christian theology means: 1. An attempt to understand Jesus’ attitude towards an issue (to distinguish it from other attitudes) 2.   A moment to confront our own attitudes (How do I need to change?)   IYCS Theological Reflection on Intergenerational Relations within the Family Series 2006: No 5   In your group read together the following Case Study: Sarah (15 years old) would like to go out with her 5 girl school friends this Saturday night. They are planning to go to a central shopping centre/mall where many young people gather. They want to see a film, and then go to have an ice cream together. But Sarah’s parents refuse to let her go. They say that it could be too dangerous, and they don’t trust her friends. Sarah insists that nothing could happen to them as a large group, but her parents are not convinced! They have a big argument, and Sarah ends up going to her bedroom in tears.   Divide the group into 2, and each discusses separately for five minutes. One group tries to imagine the feelings of Sarah, and the other tries to imagine the feelings of her parents.   They then come together and try to listen to and then convince the other for ten minutes.   The whole group comes together as one, and calmly discusses the reactions of each other’s group. -         What do we think the other group was not able to hear or understand?   Read together the Gospel of Luke 2:41-52 (Jesus’ parents lose him in Jerusalem)   Respond to the following questions together: -         -What caused the conflict between Jesus and his parents? -         -What did Jesus do that contributed to the conflict? Why did he do this? -         -What did Jesus’ parents do that contributed to the conflict? -         -How did the conflict get resolved?   Read together the Gospel of Matthew 12:46-50   Reflect together on: What is “family” for Jesus?   In silence, each one reflects on any conflict personally experienced with parents, and then each is invited to share (if willing) one incident with the group. The group then selects one experience for deeper reflection. -         -How is this experience similar to Jesus’ incident? -         -How is it different to Jesus’ incident? -         -What do the parents need to do to understand and to avoid conflict with the  group member? -         -What does the group member need to do to understand and to avoid conflict with her/his parents? -         -What can we each do to promote good relations with our parents?
