Impact on the Campaign and Advocacy from 2007 to 2011

In 2009, the Pope Benedict XVI used the theme of IYCS Global Campaign for his message of Peace. This was possible because of the admiration gave by the Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace, and its former President (Cardinal Martino).

The International Secretariat has produced 800 copies in the three languages of the global Campaign with the support of CCFD – Terre Solidaire at the end of 2007.  Copies were sent to each national movement, member of IYCS, and to all IYCS partners including UN agencies, Holy See Dicasteries, and other institutions. The opportunity is used always for the promotion of this campaign, during Forums and international meetings by the IYCS members, especially the Secretariat team.

From the theme of the Global Formation Session and the approved IYCS Global Campaign of ‘Fight Poverty-Build Peace’ the regional coordinations and some of the national movements has integrated and adopted similar or related campaigns. These include the following:

  • IYCS African Coordination Theme for Year 2007-2011:  “Promote Dialogue to build Peace: Young People in Action”
  • YCS Asian Coordination Orientation for Year 2009-2012: “Called to be Stewards of Creation, Students Strive for a Green and Just World”
  • YCS Australia : 100% Respect Campaign- Focus Areas, Racism, Bullying and Body Image
  • SCA Philippines: Awareness and Promotion of Poverty and Environment
  • YCS Uganda: “Promoting leadership through dialogue,”
  • YCS Zambia: ‘Fighting HIV/AIDS through Dialogue and Stewardship’
  • YCS Kenya: ‘’ Students against violence”
  • YCS/YSM India: ‘Empowering Relationships for sustainable Justice and Peace’
  • JEC Lebanon: ‘Witness through Action’

The global campaign helped well the International YCS to strengthen its visibility and has empowered the action of many National movements.  It has helped also the International Secretariat to have concrete focused area, and to attract the attention of partners on the focused areas.

Behind the success raised, it is also good to notice that unfortunately, at some national levels, some former leaders left their responsibility / movement with the document of the campaign. In many movements, only the national team is aware about the document, which contents can help some cell group in developing their plan of action or in the animation of their meeting.

It was recommended to the International Secretariat, in developing the new website in the three official languages, to make the document of the global campaign accessible and with the possibility of being downloadable to members.

The International Team members should also follow up the use of the Global Campaign that has enough and various topics to fit each local reality. It is a great tool to help national movements and cell groups to be more concrete in their reflections and actions.

The Global Campaign “Fight poverty –Build Peace” Step 2 is approved in its actual form for the mandate 2001-2015, with the recommendation of adding the topics of faith crisis, Good Governance, and Citizenship, which are part of many IYCS programs.

Global Campaign: What is Campaign?
Campaigning is choosing a specific course of action, on the basis of available information and resources, which will be most effective in achieving identified objectives. It is organized to achieve a change. Campaigning is about mobilizations, advocacy and lobbying.

For the period of 2007 to 2011, IYCS campaign is to help and to involve students in the actions in order to respond to their own realities and those of their world. “Fight poverty – Build Peace” is a call to students all over the world to actively engage in their local communities, to take action on issues that are limiting development and going against human rights. It is also a call for society to recognize the concerns of students and to support them in their struggles.
