Text Box: Act now to stop the destruction in the Middle East   International Young Catholic Students (IYCS) is deeply concerned about the heavy-handed response by the government of Israel to the abduction of 3 Israeli soldiers in Palestine and Lebanon.   Our members in the region have made us aware of the tragic situation that has brought fear, death and displacement of civilians, and the destruction of their homes and civil infra-structure.   Therefore, we would like the world to know that:   We denounce all forms of abduction of the Israeli soldiers by ‘Hamas’ and ‘Hezbollah’ as a blind tactic to resolve the problems of the region. We denounce the Israeli identification of ‘Hezbollah’ with the whole Lebanese government as an opportunistic lie that ignores the delicate process of re-building peace in Lebanon after decades of civil war. We denounce the disproportionate response of the government of Israel with massive mobilisation of air and ground forces in Lebanon and Palestine. We denounce: -the wild destruction of the civil infra-structure of Lebanon by the government of Israel. -the killing of innocent civilians including children in the region.      -the displacement of millions of people in the region.           Such destruction constitutes a crime against humanity. We are concerned about the extremism and anti-Semitism that is being fostered around the world and that can only increase after this senseless invasion and destruction. We are disgusted that G8 leaders (collectively and individually) have not able to apply diplomatic pressure to bring a ceasefire in the situation. We are concerned that the government of the United States of America is intentionally avoiding efforts to do anything in diffuse the situation. We are concerned that this is another example of failure of many countries in the world to respect the majority of UN resolutions by the UN Security Council on the violation of Human Rights and we call on the UN-Human Rights Council to urgently review the situation.   Finally, we call on all political and religious leaders to put their minds and heart together, in bringing a ceasefire into the situation.   We believe that peace in the Middle East region is vital for global security.
