Text Box: 60th Anniversary of YCS Internationality.

We are celebrating the 60th Anniversary of YCS Internationality. This will mark the anniversary of the first YCS International Meeting that took place in Fribourg, Switzerland from 1 to 8 September 1946.

Since the 1920’s, YCS national movements developed and existed independently. However they gradually became aware of each other’s existence, and of the common points that united them (student identity, objectives, theological and pastoral vision, See-Judge-Act methodology …), arousing a need to reflect together and support each other. Eventually, in the internationalist climate prevailing after the Second World War, the initiative was taken by the Canadian, American, and French YCS to organise an international meeting to respond to that need.

This resulted in the meeting in Fribourg in 1946, which brought 8 national movements together. That meeting outlined the fundamental orientation of the YCS, decided to set up an International YCS Center of Documentation and Information in Paris (International Secretariat today) for the service of all YCS groups existing throughout the world, and an International Commission (replaced by the term International Team today) was mandated to work for all existing YCS movements, to maintain links with the Church hierarchy and to prepare for the future sessions.

Thus, we are reminded of the ‘entity’ and ‘status’ of YCS as an International Organisation which over the years has grown, so that it presently exists in 80 countries throughout the world, and has formed millions of individuals. Therefore, the IYCS International Committee in August 2003 decided that, in 2006, we should mark this 60th anniversary with celebrations world-wide. We thus began the preparations for this event.
